Seller’s Letter
About this hidden gem...
This was an ordinary rancher style house a few years back. We fell in love with the home’s potential and its surroundings.
Our vision was to transform the home, to take it from a small, chopped-up floor plan to an exceptional living space that has order, purpose, and most of all makes sense! When we first stepped in, years ago, the front door opened to stairs leading down. It felt as if you may fall as soon as you walked through the door—not a very friendly feeling. Now, the entry welcomes you with a sense of lift and draws you into the living space. What a great feeling!
“Art and entertainment” describe this home, with wide-open living spaces and custom art features sprinkled throughout.
The three square “art” windows in the front of the house are evenly spaced from the outside but span two rooms inside. The window glass was designed and created by Steve Adams, a nationally known glass artist, and inspired by the flowing, bubbly Latah Creek, which can be seen reflected in the movements in the glass. In the evening, when the lights are on in the two rooms, the windows offer a soft apricot glow against the ash blue siding. Beautiful!
Inside, one of the doors is adorned with two art pieces that came from a sisters’ trip to San Miguel, Mexico, which is well known for its art schools, but I know it as a town with beautifully carved doors that lead into businesses and private courtyards, which I wanted to “bring home.” The hand-pressed “amate bark” paper was designed by a local woman who had floor space in San Miguel's marketplace held in front of the town’s Cathedral. So many friendly people!
Across the room from the front entry is where you'll find the relocated stairs. The special-order curved glass was a fun project. We wanted a clean edge, using tempered glass—which is very special—just like the family who will eventually live here! After many hours of research and phone calls we found a glass manufacturer in the southeastern part of the country. We carefully drew a template out of cardboard to reflect how the glass had to be installed, then we folded it up for shipping. It was so scary and exciting when the glass arrived two months later—it fit! Phew!
On these same stairs the rail posts also had to be special. These posts are hand-shaped basswood by Jeff May, a very talented Northwest woodcarver, who lives just north of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
We'll leave you to discover some of the many surprise features that transformed this ordinary house into a home you can call your own.
Sincerely,
Sue and Jeff Guyett
